First, lets get the name straight. When I first came across this system I pronounced it exactly what it looked like and sounded like: X-OOPS. That is not how it is pronounced. According to the crazy English rules and guidelines, the correct pronunciation of the word is "zoo’ps".

It is an abbreviation for the word eXtensible Object Oriented Portal System. The name is what it started out to be, a portal system but XOOPS is trying extremely hard to pull it towards being a Content Management System. No matter the size of the site, large, medium, or small, it can be a web framework.

XOOPS was let out for the public as a GNU GPL (General Public License) and anybody can modify and freely use it how they want. You can redistribute it only if you go by the terms that have been set for GPL distribution.

XOOPS Features

• It is driven by a Database

It has the required set-up to run a content management system, which is web-based. It currently uses MySQL to store the data.

• Full Modules

You can deactivate, activate, install, uninstall modules with a simple click of a button. It’s an extremely simple method used.

• Personalized

You have a personal profile when you register. Edit your profile, use avatars as your picture, select themes that match you, and many more.

• The Management

It has a set up message system that makes it easy to email, send private messages or you can even search out each user by criteria.

• International Support

XOOPS has a team that is located from different parts of the world. It supports non-English speakers.

• A Resourceful Permission System for Groups

You can easily set up user-friendly permissions as an administrator.

What can you use it for? By lightly using it, you can use it as a journal or personal weblog. That is why you get it as a standard installation, which gives you the News module only. If you use it on medium sites, modules like Forum, Download, Web Links, News, and etc.you can establish a community to intermingle with visitors and members. For larger sites, you can incorporate modules throughout the whole system and become a user management system.
